DESIGN THROUGH MAKING
Braun Bomba Craft
a device specialized for making İzmir Bombası
About
Created in collaboration with De’Longhi Braun Household GmbH, this project explores how a cultural dessert ritual can be transformed into a playful product experience. İzmir Bombası is a molten-filled chocolate pastry popular in Turkey, known for its soft dough and warm, oozing center. This compact kitchen device allows users to make İzmir Bombası at home, turning a handcrafted recipe into an emotional, sensory interaction.
Design Direction
Rather than fully automating each step of the process, the design prioritizes the craft culture and the satisfaction derived from mindful engagement.
The iconic form language of Braun’s hand blender informed our choices in material, silhouette, and color, helping anchor the design in a familiar yet refined aesthetic.
Functional Qualities
Given the dessert’s fast-paced consumption ritual, the design called for a efficient tool that enables high-precision control over dough thickness, a critical factor in achieving the perfect result. A clear material hierarchy is established, balancing transparency, durability, and visual appeal
User Interface
The user interface is ergonomically optimized for hand operation, with clearly differentiated buttons and a radial layout that minimizes wrist movement while intuitively guiding the user through the process.
Design should not dominate things, should not dominate people. It should help people. That’s its role.
